What is yoga?
Yoga is a science invented or discovered about 4000 years ago. The exact origins are a little unclear, but what is known is that the Aryans, a civilization that preceded the Vedas in Inda practiced it. When the Vedas invaded the Aryans they adopted yoga after seeing the benefits and possibilities. After this yoga became a practice of people who wanted to live a spiritual life.
Yoga as a physical practice comprises over 80 poses and sequences that in combination create what is called a vinyasa (or flow).
How many times a week should I do yoga?
As many times as you desire as long as you feel good about it. It is recommended that you practice at least 3 times a week. It can be practiced in the morning, afternoon or evening. Also, I always recommend to vary your practice. Not just to avoid boredom, but to avoid overworking a single part of your body. Thinking of opposites can help you vary your practice, such as Sun -Mon, forward bends- back bends, gentle and strong, flexibility and strength, vinyasa - power yoga and so forth.
Can men do yoga?
Of course, men can and should do yoga. As men age, just as in women, the body goes through a transformation ( men have a menopause too). Yoga aids in the regulation of hormones, balance, stability, weight and more. Men who do yoga develop strength, flexibility, equanimity and restoration of total health.
Other studios chant OM at the beginning and end of the class. Why NBY doesn't ?
Even though chanting can be calming to the nervous system due to the vibrational qualities of the sounds, I believe that people should feel comfortable in our studio. I've attended studios were you feel the tension when the teacher says 'Let's chant three oms'. We can set our intention in other ways without invocations.
What style of yoga do you teach at New Body Yoga?
I have practiced most major styles since I started my yoga path, from Ashtanga to Zen (A to Z), but found that a fusion of the benefits of some added to the benefits of another created a better balance in my body. So, my teaching method I call it a yoga fusion. Depends on the goal our teaching is adjusted to fit the moment but always with the strong foundation of traditional yoga.
Does yoga help me lose weight?
Yes it can help you lose weight. You just have to make sure that you choose a movement class (some other schools call it a flow, vinyasa, sequence etc). Movement helps in calorie burning. But wait a minute, yoga and exercise alone will not help you lose pounds. You have to change your eating habits. Not necesarily toward vegetarianism but more toward a lower intake of calories per day.
